Course overview
Our BA (Hons) Criminology and Sociology* is a three-year degree. The teaching team includes practising criminologists at some centres. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of cutting edge criminological and sociological theorising and will be able to apply this to current socio-economic policies and conditions.
In order to achieve this, students will develop a critical understanding of criminology and sociology in relation to current issues such as urbanisation, embodiment, family, globalisation, marginalisation and migration. Criminology and Sociology will be considered from a fresh perspective using feminist, critical, cultural, and race critiques to revisit societal issues. The course is aimed at students who may not be served by the current sociology/criminology degree courses in research-led universities. In the 2020 National Student Survey,
The University of Law has been ranked first amongst universities for overall student satisfaction in England. *Subject to approval.

Assessment
Assessments are spread out throughout the duration of the course, rather than having lots of exams at the end of the year. This means at the end of each semester, you have a revision/consolidation week followed by two weeks for assessment in each module.
A range of assessment methods will be used across the programme; these include invigilated unseen examinations, written coursework assignments, and a dissertation module. This variety of assessment techniques reflects the diversity of the curriculum and enables students a greater chance of success; by offering a variety of assessment methods, we aim to remove barriers to students who may find that more traditional ways of assessment do not truly reflect their abilities.
Course Structure
Each year is made up of two semesters consisting of 12 teaching weeks and one week consolidation/revision and two weeks to complete assessments. You will study a total of 18 modules over the three years of the course.
- Year 1: 31 study weeks including a one-week induction
- Year 2: 30 study weeks plus one week optional International Leadership Summer School in Berlin
