Course overview

This distance learning IGCSE Biology course is designed to develop a broad understanding of biological principles and concepts, whilst developing learners’ key biological investigative skills. You’ll delve into the deepest mechanisms of cell division and cell functions within different organisms, as well as discovering how the various systems of the human body work together to facilitate life. From genetics and evolution to biodiversity and deforestation, you’ll have a solid foundation in biological studies after completing this online GCSE Biology course.

Students who study IGCSE Biology may go on to study A-Level Biology, particularly those who want a career in the health and clinical professions, including medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, physiotherapy, nursing, and forensic science. Assessment

You can enrol now for examinations from Summer 2022.

You’ll be required to complete the two IGCSE standard written exams.

Official exams

  • Paper 1: 1 hour 45 minutes, 50% of GCSE, 100 marks.
  • Paper 2: 1 hour 45 minutes, 50% of GCSE, 100 marks.

We provide a guaranteed exam space in one of our exam centres around the UK to take away the hassle of needing to find your own.

Assignments

During your course, you will also be required to complete a range of assignments that don’t contribute to your final grade but will prepare you for your final examinations. There is no coursework to complete. All exams must be taken in the same session.

Cell biology

Investigate the structure of the basic building blocks of life.

Unit 2
Organisation

Learn about the digestive system! Explore the functions and actions of the digestive systems of humans and animals, and how essential nutrients are extracted and moved through the body. Go on to explore the organs of the body and their roles before looking at non-communicable diseases such as heart failure and cancer.

Unit 3
Infection and response

This section will explore how we can avoid diseases by reducing contact with them, as well as how the body uses barriers against pathogens. This topic takes you through viral, bacterial and fungal infections.

Unit 4
Bioenergetics

This topic explores the systems and processes used by a variety of life to harness energy from their food and environment.

Unit 5
Homeostasis and response

Cells in the body can only survive within narrow limits – the body’s environment needs to be constantly maintained. This topic explores how the body maintains this delicate balance and how it reacts to change.

Unit 6
Inheritance, variation and evolution

Evolution is the science of life’s change and adaptation in response to the challenges of the environment. Through the study of inherited traits, we can examine how various lifeforms develop to suit their environments best.

Unit 7
Ecology

It’s the circle of life! And you’ll get to study it in ecology. You’ll look at food chains and the various cycles of life which surround us.
