A master’s degree is a level 7 postgraduate qualification, which you usually study after completing a bachelor’s degree. Most MA courses last between 1 and 2 years depending on whether you are studying part-time or full time and involve more independent work than an undergraduate course such as a BA or BSc. Master’s degrees can be studied in a wide range of subjects and are increasingly viewed as necessary to employment in many fields. Check out our range of master’s courses and get started today!

Online Masters courses also available
Master’s degrees are also less advanced than a PhD. You can study an MA in a variety of fields, including more general master’s programmes such as history or the English language, or a more specific MA which focuses on one aspect of a subject, such as medieval history or gothic fiction.
Depending on which method you choose to study through (online or in class) you will also generally spend less time being guided by a lecturer or mentor and will be expected to guide your own learning to some extent. For postgraduate study, you can choose to study in class or via distance learning, such as here at CoursesOnline. Some of the most popular master’s courses we offer include:
- MSc Criminology and Criminal Psychology
- MSc International Business
- MSc Business and Marketing Management
- MSc Marketing
- MSc Cyber Security
There are also master’s degrees called MREs which are research degrees. These are great if you want to go into the research side of a career such as criminal justice, computer science or clinical psychology.
Who can study a master’s degree?
Depending on which undergraduate degree you completed, you can also explore an entirely different avenue of study when undertaking a master’s. Whereas some MA programmes require specific subject knowledge obtained at the bachelor’s level for you to do an MA, other MA entry requirements simply state that you need a bachelor’s degree with a specific classification. This means that if you have a BA in creative writing for example, you could go on to study project management at postgraduate level (provided you gain a good degree classification such as a 2:1).
Some postgraduate courses also allow people who have not done an undergraduate degree but have a professional level of understanding to study a master’s degree to progress professional development. An MA on average costs less in tuition fees than a bachelor’s degree, both due to the fact that it takes less time and as a qualification itself, as it requires less one-to-one teaching time.
Why study postgraduate courses?
Getting a Masters, whether you require it for your chosen career or not, can greatly benefit your employment opportunities. Not only can an employer see that you have dedicated more time to further study of your chosen subject area, but it gives you an advantage over other less qualified candidates. Those with an MA also have a higher earning potential due to their advanced qualifications. If you are considering changing careers and no longer wish to pursue the avenue that your current bachelor’s degree is in, then an MA gives you the opportunity to get into the career you want.
A master’s degree can also be beneficial if you just love to learn. If you have completed your bachelor’s and enjoyed the independent study aspect of university, then going on to do a master’s can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience in itself. Visiting university open days or exploring other postgraduate study options such as a PGDip, PGCert, MPhil or MRES can give you a greater all-round idea of the options available to you.
