ELCAS Courses
About ELCAS Funding
ELCAS is a scheme that funds civilian qualifications for armed forces personnel and veterans. It encourages people who have left the armed forces to undertake a course and helps them transition into civilian life. With these resources, service leavers can gain qualifications recognised outside the military.
An ELCAS-approved provider must deliver courses funded through ELCAS that lead to a nationally recognised qualification at level 3 or above on the national qualification framework (or level 6 or above on the Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework).
ECLAS funding is open to current serving personnel and veterans who have completed at least six years of eligible service (four years if that service was completed before 1 April 2017).
Only service accumulated since 1 April 2000 counts towards eligibility. Current serving personnel are automatically enrolled in the scheme upon completing Phase 1 training, as there’s no separate application.
Your funding tier depends on your service length. Both tiers cover 80% of course fees from an ELCAS-approved provider; you just need to pay the remaining 20%.
- Lower tier – for those with 6+ years of eligible service (or 4+ years if completed before 1 April 2017). Covers 80% of course fees, up to £1,000 per claim.
- Higher tier – for those with 8+ years of eligible service. Covers 80% of course fees, up to £2,000 per claim.
