What is ‘marketing communication’?
Marketing communication refers to the means used by businesses to convey messages about their brand, products and services to their target audience. It’s considered a key component of every company’s business strategy for a good reason. After all, communication is how companies inform potential buyers of their products, and build productive, long-lasting customer relationships, both of which are vital to their success. Social media, blogs, company websites and email campaigns are some examples of the communication tools often used to this end.

Marketing communication also features in the 4Ps of marketing (also known as the marketing mix), though it tends to be referred to as promotion – with the other 3Ps standing for product, price, and place. What’s more, communication is so important to and within the field that it has its own mix called the marketing communications mix. This is made up of various methods used by companies to carry messages about their products and services to potential customers. Some examples include advertising, personal selling, public relations, word-of-mouth marketing and direct marketing. Because these methods all approach promotion from different angles, they make use of different communication channels and means. This is done to ensure that the intended message reaches the desired target market.

What is ‘digital marketing’?
As our collective use of technology and the Internet continues to climb, more aspects of our everyday lives become digitally-enabled. Given that all businesses want to be where their target market might be, it’s no wonder marketing has had to move a lot of its operations to the world wide web. Digital marketing is therefore marketing’s answer to the digital boom and a way of promoting goods and services by working with web-based communication channels such as websites, social media, search engines, mobile applications and email. The tactics tend to vary from business to business, but those that are most popular at the moment are:

– Paid search/pay-per-click (PPC)
– SEO/Search engine optimisation
– Content marketing
– Social media marketing
– Email marketing

Why is marketing important?
As LinkedIn points out: ‘the heart of the business lies in its marketing’. Considering the role marketing plays in introducing products and services to potential buyers, we can imagine how not having it and the tools it offers would impact the economy. If people don’t know about things, they won’t buy them, and if things aren’t being bought then businesses go bankrupt, people don’t have jobs to do, the government has no one to tax, and eventually the economy collapses.

On a smaller scale, however, even lack of good marketing can damage a business. Marketing doesn’t just make potential buyers aware of the business, but it also helps foster long-lasting relationships between sellers and buyers, which then has a ripple effect on the whole brand and its future success. Good marketing can be credited with things such as favourable reputation, customer trust and ultimately sales.

Levels of Courses

Level 3

Completion of this level allows you to progress on to the next level of study (Level 4/Certificate). This level may also qualify you for some junior-level positions in the industry, but you’re highly advised to secure your prospects by gaining more qualifications.


Level 4 • Certificate

Completion of this stage enables you to advance to Diploma-level study, though a limited number of undergraduate courses may be available to you as well as entry-level employment with smaller businesses.


Level 5 • Diploma

Completion of this stage qualifies you for employment within the marketing industry, though some employers may still ask for more advanced-level certification and knowledge. However, you are now able to enroll in all relevant university courses.


Level 6 • Bachelor’s

Completion of this level gives you the opportunity to continue studying at graduate level, or pursue employment in a relevant field of your choice. Most, if not all, career paths within marketing are within your reach.


Level 7 • Master’s

Completion of master’s level of study continues to qualify you for roles within the field. Holding this qualification may or may not strengthen your application – at this stage, industry experience is often prioritised over above-bachelor’s qualifications.
