What short courses can I study?

Short courses are offered in a wide range of subjects, some of the most popular being:

  • Bookkeeping
  • Hospitality
  • Childcare
  • Event Management
  • Administration
  • Digital Marketing
  • Hairdressing
  • Beauty and Make-Up

There also exist short language courses, apprenticeships in manual labour and foundation courses in various domains relating to IT, computing and office administration.

How can I take a short course?

You can take a short course at a college or online, usually after completing secondary education in high school, although former education is not mandatory. The entry requirements will depend on the short course – though many may ask for passes at GSCE/Standard Grade level, there are courses open to those with no qualifications who perhaps instead have experience in a specific domain.

Financial aid and the possibility of taking out a student loan will depend on the length of your short course, your employment status and if you have previously taken out a student loan in the past.

What are the benefits of taking a short course?

The main benefit of taking a short course is that the coursework effectively doubles up as training whilst taking a fraction of the time that an undergraduate course would. After you enrol, you will learn how to work in your chosen subject and hone your professional development – without the financial costs that come with a longer program – in addition to learning new skills and preparing for employment.

The option of online learning also means that you can work around family life, work and other commitments. Online learning is also perfect for those who do not live in close proximity to a college or university.

What can I do after a short course?

After a short course, many students are able to go straight into the domain of their choosing and begin their career as trainees or obtain entry-level positions; the instant training is the main advantage of certain short courses. However, you can also take a short course as a starting point into more advanced courses such as an HNC/HND, or even work towards taking an undergraduate course and then a master’s degree in your chosen subject.
