Why should I take an award?
An award provides the student with the most basic qualification within the Award, Certificate and Diploma system, which is advantageous for numerous reasons. The credits assigned to either an award, certificate or diploma give us a suggestion of the length and duration of a course: the 1-12 credits which comprise an award qualification mean that the average student could take 10 hours to complete one credit, 120 hours in total to complete a short course or a short training qualification.Â
By comparison, certificate qualifications are worth 13-36 credits and diplomas worth 37 credits. This means that an award qualification, especially an online course is the perfect part-time accompaniment to a working or family lifestyle, enabling the student to bolster their professional development via e-learning in their specific area of work, whilst still making time for other commitments.Â
How can I take an award?
Entry requirements for award courses depend on the level of the award and the provider of the course: entry-level awards very rarely ask for academic qualifications, and awards offered at higher levels might simply demand experience in the subject (for example management experience for a Level 5 Business Management Award) or for the student to have completed preceding awards or other relevant academic qualifications. Awards courses can be taken in local colleges and education centres, whilst others are online courses taken via distance learning.Â
What can I do after an award course?
Some award courses enable their students to go straight into work after completing their 120 hours of a training course; many can use an award qualification as a stepping stone to an entry-level job in their chosen field, where they can then take the proceeding award levels as they work.Â
Awards also provide a stepping stone into further study or even higher education, where students can choose to continue with their studies full-time, perhaps opting for a certificate qualification before progressing onto a diploma qualification. Awards can also simply enhance your CV and employability: those working in vocational professions can simply refine and improve their skill-set with an award qualification specialising in their field.
