How to Develop Your Entrepreneurial Skills

by Emily Atkinson-Dalton

Entrepreneurial skills are one of the most highly regarded skills to have, and they can set you up for a very exciting, lucrative and fast-progressing career.

Whether you want to start your own business, explore managerial roles or move into a brand new career, developing entrepreneurial skills can help you achieve your career goals today.

What are the skills of an Entrepreneur?

Entrepreneurs have several skills which enable them to thrive in their professional and personal lives. This includes soft skills, which are related to their personality and personal qualities, as well as hard skills, which are related to professional and industry-specific skills and knowledge.

Soft Skills Of An Entrepreneur

  • Creative thinking
  • Critical thinking
  • Problem-Solving
  • Communication skills
  • Leadership
  • Decision making
  • Teamwork skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Adaptability

Entrepreneurs will also need the confidence to utilise their skills, knowledge and expertise and stand behind their decisions and ideas whilst also working with others to explore the best ideas and solutions.

Business owners will need to have many competencies in a range of areas of entrepreneurial thinking, including people-centred skills and business knowledge, whether they own a small business or a huge company.

Hard Skills Of An Entrepreneur

  • Marketing
  • Knowledge of finance
  • Business acumen
  • Industry-specific knowledge
  • Strategic thinking skills
  • IT skills
  • Time management
  • Knowledge and expertise in budgeting
  • Human resource and talent acquisition skills

Depending on the type of career you want, the industry you are in and your ultimate career goals, the soft and hard entrepreneurial skills which benefit you could vary. However, several of these skills are applicable in a wide variety of industries and will help you progress whether you work in education, healthcare, IT, business or another industry entirely.

The combination of hard and soft skills will ensure essential areas of business such as partnership, communicating with stakeholders, pricing and creating a successful business plan.

How can entrepreneurial skills be applied in your career?

Depending on your career and career goals, you might find some of the skills mentioned above more useful than others. Skills that entrepreneurs need can help in job roles such as:

CEO and Management Positions

Business managers and CEOs need several entrepreneurial skills in order to thrive in this career, including leadership skills, decision-making skills and business acumen.

Management careers, in general, are often helped by having the hard and soft skills of an entrepreneur, as you are likely to be managing a team of people. Therefore, having the confidence and leadership qualities to manage others is key. For those who have an idea for a business startup, having the know-how to become a successful entrepreneur and bring your business to life is crucial.

Other roles include financial managers, public relations managers and sales managers.

Marketing and Advertising

Marketing and advertising are both areas of business which are key to entrepreneurship, and therefore, having entrepreneurial skills and characteristics is an essential part of this role.

Marketing officers, digital marketing managers and advertising managers are roles which would benefit in particular from a combination of hard and soft skills such as marketing and business acumen, communication and creativity.

Finance and IT

The hard skills associated with entrepreneurship could be essential to your career, depending on the area you work in. For example, expertise in IT and finance will be needed for careers in these areas. The great thing is that if you work in these careers currently, you already have some of the skills needed to become an entrepreneur! If you don’t, then developing these skills can help you get into this field.

Other Areas

The hard skills associated with entrepreneurship could be essential to your career, depending on the area you work in. For example, expertise in IT and finance will be needed for careers in these areas. The great thing is that if you work in these careers currently, you already have some of the skills needed to become an entrepreneur! If you don’t, then developing these skills can help you get into this field.

If you do not have or want to pursue any of the career types above, then you are still likely to benefit from developing your entrepreneurial skills and qualities. Most job roles will require you to have people skills, including team working and communication, and if you want to explore new opportunities in senior positions, then leadership skills are essential.

Entrepreneur skills are also a great way of moving up the ladder and getting promotions, management roles and/or increased salary. The additional value that entrepreneurial skills will bring to your career can make you an invaluable member of the team and improve your chances of reaching your career aims. Even if you are already in your dream career, entrepreneurial skills can give you the confidence and practical knowledge to make the most of your career.

How to improve your entrepreneurial skills

Improving your entrepreneurial skills doesn’t need to take years and years, especially when you study flexibly around your current work and lifestyle commitments.

Online Management courses can help you develop entrepreneurial skills such as leadership, decision-making, strategic thinking and business knowledge. There are a variety of courses you can enrol on, from certificates and Level 2 qualifications to Level 7 masters degrees and everything in between. These courses can help you on your entrepreneurial journey as you develop the essential skills you need to get that promotion, explore new careers or become your own boss.

You can choose the qualification which best suits your current knowledge and experience, as well as the most relevant course to help you achieve your career aspirations. These accredited courses offer you the opportunity to learn and develop management skills, which are a huge aspect of the entrepreneurial skill set, and you can learn at your own time and pace from home.

Explore the courses available right now, and you can enrol by visiting the course page. Each page has a list of the modules on offer as well as entry requirements and who the course is suitable for. Make sure you opt for the course which will teach you what you need to know, for example, a business management course if you want to run a successful business.

If you don’t have any work experience currently or don’t have any that relates to entrepreneurial skills, then seeking out work experience in business or sales can also be a great way to learn the practical elements of these skills on the job. This is especially useful when combined with study and can put your knowledge into practice as you learn to work collaboratively and use your expertise to help your team.

If you want to develop your entrepreneurial skills, make sure to explore the current distance learning courses available and choose the qualification which is most relevant for you.

Whether you dream of making your new business idea a reality or want to develop your financial management career, developing your entrepreneurial skills might just be the key to your future.
