FAQs
Do I need a teaching qualification?
No, you can be an assessor without being a teacher
Which unit do I require?
Everybody needs unit 1 (theory).
You then require unit 2 if assessing in the workplace, this is assessments which are not simulated and carried out in a real workplace, often assessed through observations or witness testimonies.
Unit 3 is if assessing in the classroom or a simulated environment.
Do I need to be observed carrying out the observations?
Yes, the person assessing requires their Assessor and IQA qualification and would need to provide evidence and sign a declaration. If you do not have someone, there is an option to come to Milton Keynes for observation.
Does it matter which qualifications I assess on?
No, as long as they are criteria-based
Can I start at any time?
Yes, you can enrol and start at any time.
Delivery
Students must have two candidates ready to assess in a classroom or simulated environment in order to complete this qualification, as units 2 and 3 require the student to carry out two assessments with two candidates.
These need to be observed live by a qualified IQA or an experienced assessor who can be a witness, and we will then conduct a professional discussion with you to confirm your competence.
Subjects
The Assessor Award consists of three possible units. This course covers Units 1 and 3, which are designed for those assessing in the classroom/simulated environment.
If you also assess in a workplace setting, you will need to complete Unit 2 and should enrol in the Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement.
For those who need to know about assessment but do not need to carry out assessments, such as managers or frontline staff, giving advice.
This is a knowledge unit and requires you to be able to understand the principles of assessment, the different methods, how to plan assessments, involve others, make decisions, understand quality assurance, legal and good practice requirements, and how to manage information.
The method of assessment of the unit is through written explanations. Although it is mandatory, this unit alone does not qualify you to assess.
Aimed at those carrying out assessments in the classroom or other training environments.
Assessments in the classroom may include diagnostic testing. This unit is aimed at those who carry out assessments in the classroom or other training environments.
You have to prepare assessments such as tests, assignments, questions, or projects, carry out these assessments, keep records, and follow legal and good practice requirements.
The method of assessment is by observation of you carrying out assessments of vocational skills outside the work environment. If you combine this unit with Unit 1, you will gain an Award in Assessing Vocationally Related Achievement.
