What is a level 1 qualification?
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) has set 3 entry levels and 8 levels, which are designed to explain the relationship between qualifications in terms of their difficulty and size. The higher the level, the harder the qualification. Here are a few examples:
- Level 2 qualifications include: GCSEs, level 2 awards, intermediate apprenticeships, music grades 4 and 5.
- Level 3 qualifications include: A levels, NVQ level 3, the international baccalaureate and advanced apprenticeships
- Level 4 qualifications include: HNCs, the certificate of higher education (CertHE) and higher apprenticeships
- Level 5 qualifications include: HNDs, foundation degrees, DipHEs, level 5 diplomas.
- Level 6 qualifications include bachelor’s degrees, degree apprenticeships, graduate diplomas and level 6 awards.
Although level one is preceded by three entry levels, it’s the first formal numbered level in the RQF. So qualifications at this level tend to cover introductory knowledge and basic key skills, which you’ll be expected to apply with guidance from your tutor.
Qualifications available at level 1:
- Level 1 Award
- Level 1 Certificate
- Level 1 Diploma
- Level 1 ESOL
- Level 1 essential skills/functional skills
- GCSE grades 3, 2 and 1
- Level 1 NVQ
- Music grades 1, 2 and 3
Who are level 1 qualifications aimed at?
If you want to study a particular subject but don’t have any formal qualifications, level 1 qualifications are ideal, as there are no entry requirements. Their basic content makes them great for adults who want to improve their education, forge a new career or simply learn a new skill.
What kind of subjects can I study?
A wide variety of subjects are available at this level, from IT to horticulture. Here are some of the most popular subjects on offer:
- Plastering
- Plumbing
- Personal training
- Horticulture
- Business skills
- Electrical installation
- English
- Childcare
- Carpentry
- IT helpdesk skills
- Coaching
- Photography
How long does a level 1 qualification take to complete?
In addition to its level, every qualification on the qualifications framework has a credit value, which measures the approximate time it takes to complete it. One credit is equal to ten hours of study.
When you’re choosing a course, it’s useful to know that Awards are worth 1-12 credits (10-120 hours), Certificates are worth 13-36 credits (130-360 hours) and Diplomas are worth over 37 credits (370 hours).
What can I do after my level 1 course?
Once you’ve successfully completed your level 1 course, you’ll be able to boost your employability by moving on to a level 2 qualification. Studying at this level will give you a solid understanding of your chosen subject and the skills you’ll need to carry out a variety of work-related tasks.
