English language equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher
Assessment
The course is assessed in two parts:
- An online, open-book exam
- A practical risk assessment
You’ll need to pass both to gain the NEBOSH National General Certificate.
When you complete the exam and risk assessment
For NG1 – The NEBOSH NG1 open-book exam is completed on an exam date of your choosing, but we will advise you on a date that aligns with your studies. Day 1-5 of the course focuses on the NG1 subject matter, so your exam is best taken shortly after the completion of day 5 of the course.
If you are taking the course through e-learning, you can arrange your exam with our helpful admin team for a date that works for you.
For NG2 – You’ll complete the NG2 risk assessment for an exam date after your last study day. On days 6-10 of a classroom course, your NEBOSH trainer will guide you through working examples, the principles of which you’ll apply in your own workplace risk assessment.

Once you have a NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, you can:
- …apply for Associate membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (Also known as ‘AIOSH’).
- …upgrade to Technical Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH – With the NEBOSH General, you will have met the academic requirements required
After this, you may proceed to other NEBOSH courses, such as the NEBOSH National Diploma (making you eligible for Graduate IOSH status) and then to chartered status (CMIOSH), the premier qualification and status for safety professionals.
