A Level English Language
Course overview
A Level English Language is an RQF Level 3 qualification awarded by AQA under specification 7702. Learners analyse language variation, change and acquisition through two written examinations and a non-exam assessment. Instead of studying a fixed set of literary works, learners examine how language actually behaves in newspapers, transcripts, adverts, digital messaging, older documents and children’s speech, then explain what they find using analytical methods set out in the specification.
The qualification is linear, so all assessments are taken at the end of the course in a single May or June series. It is delivered online by Lift College with UK tutor support and monthly pay-as-you-learn pricing.
Who's It For?
- Adults aged 18 or over who want a full A Level rather than an equivalence or access route.
- Those who need a Level 3 qualification for a degree application, a teacher training route or a career change.
- Learners who did not take, or did not pass, English Language at A Level first time round and want to retake it properly.
- Those who enjoy taking apart how real people write and speak, rather than studying set literary texts.
- Those supporting a home-educated learner who needs a recognised A Level with a recognised awarding body.
- Learners who can study independently online and travel to an exam centre in May or June.

Duration study load
Typical study time is 12 to 18 months. There are no set term dates; learners study at their own pace around work and family. Most learners spend a few hours each week, but can do more or less based on their own pace.
Delivery
The course is studied 100% online and can be started at any time — there are no fixed term dates or cohorts. Learners can log in from a phone, tablet or laptop at any time.
Written exams are sat at an approved centre in a May or June series. There are 10 approved exam centres across England: Birmingham, Bolton, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, Mitcham, Newcastle, Romford, St Neots and Taunton, run by Tutors and Exams.
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements. AQA confirms that specification 7702 has no previous learning requirements, and any requirements for entry to a course based on the specification are at the discretion of the centre. You do not need to hold GCSEs to enrol.
AQA does recommend that students have the skills and knowledge associated with a GCSE English Language course or equivalent, as the papers ask for extended analytical writing under timed conditions. If you have not studied English formally for some time, a GCSE English Language course first is a sensible step, though it is not a condition of enrolment.
You should be 18 or over, comfortable studying online, and able to attend an approved exam centre for the written papers.
