This qualification has been developed to provide contemporary skills and knowledge required for learners working or aspiring to work as a teacher in the further education sector. It has been designed to meet the latest occupational standards and replaces the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training.
The qualification aims to cover a wide spectrum of job roles within the diverse FE landscape, supporting educators in colleges, adult education, offender education, work-based learning, and independent training organisations.
This qualification equips learners with the knowledge and skills for subject-specific teaching, addressing challenges with tailored pedagogy and integrating subject knowledge into effective teaching strategies, preparing them for the dynamic and diverse landscape of further education teaching. What you'll learn
The Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills) will help you develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to become an effective teacher in further education and training settings.
Throughout the course, you will learn how to plan, deliver, and evaluate engaging lessons for a wide range of learners. You will explore different teaching methods and learning theories and learn how to apply these in real teaching environments.
The course will also introduce you to assessment strategies, helping you understand how to measure learner progress and provide constructive feedback. You will develop skills in creating inclusive learning environments, supporting learners with different needs, abilities, and backgrounds.
In addition, you will learn about professional responsibilities and standards in teaching, including safeguarding, equality and diversity, and reflective practice. The course includes opportunities to apply what you learn through teaching practice, helping you build confidence and experience in the classroom.

Duration study load
This is an online course, you have up to two years to complete, but the course can be completed in a shorter time frame.
The guided learning hours is 395 hours.
Delivery
The course is designed to be flexible and fit around your existing commitments. It is delivered through a combination of online written lessons and live video webinars.
All webinars are recorded and made available on Moodle, allowing you to watch them at a time that suits you. During the live sessions, you will have opportunities to ask questions. If you are unable to attend a session but still have questions, you can arrange a meeting directly with your tutor.
The online lessons can be accessed at any time and are also available in audio format if required.

Work placement
Teaching hours
Learners must have access to a work placement within a further education setting throughout the course. The placement should be a minimum of 250 hours, with at least 150 dedicated to teaching practice.
Teaching practice hours
The 150 hours of teaching practice need to consist of:

At least 100 hours in your subject area, of which a minimum of 80 hours must be face-to-face delivery.

Evidence of demonstrating high-quality teaching online and remotely.

20 hours teaching a different subject or at a different venue/subject with the same provider – these hours can include a range of professional activities, not only teaching hours
Non-teaching practice
The non-teaching practice hours should be spent completing professional activities such as:

CPD activities.
Mentors
All trainee teachers should have support from two staff members at their placement; they must be willing to complete any necessary training at the commencement of the course and liaise with MKLC throughout your course.
Mentor 1
Subject Specialist competent in and teaching your subject area, offering subject-specific support. This staff member should be available to dedicate 30 minutes per week for support and engagement in assessments, especially in the subject-specific aspect.
Mentor 2
Local Pastoral Support Mentor for general advice and support. This mentor may be supporting a group of trainee teachers. The recommended support time is 30 minutes per trainee per week. This mentor is expected to liaise with the provider regarding ongoing progress reports.
Observations
You will need to have a minimum of 10 observations, the majority of ideally in groups of at least ten learners. Each observation must be a minimum of 45 minutes and completed either by MKLC or your subject specialist placement mentor. MKLC will complete two of your observations spaced out during your course. The observations must be spaced throughout your qualification, with a minimum of 10 days between observations. A maximum of two observations may be of your live remote delivery, and one observation can be assessed remotely.
Location
You must experience placements in at least two different locations to gain exposure to diverse teaching environments, and a minimum of 20 non-teaching hours should be dedicated to activities in the second location. If not feasible, it is acceptable for the second placement to be in a different subject area/and or department within the same provider.
Professional recognition
With this qualification, you can apply for QTLS with the Society for Education and Training
Assessment
You will complete the assignments on the Moodle site, as well as having access to teaching hours, which will be observed. Below, the requirements for teaching hours, placements, and observations are covered in more detail. For the assignments, these may be a written task, a reflective journal, or producing evidence from your teaching role. Each assignment has the criteria marked on it that it aims to cover.
However, there may be cases where these are not fully covered. Your tutor will provide feedback online where you have uploaded your work, as well as send you a progress report with feedback telling you what else you need to do to complete the assignment.
At the end of your course, once you have completed all units of the course, you will need to have a 30-minute professional discussion. This will be conducted with two qualified teachers, one from MKLC and one from your placement.

The requirements seem different to my colleague who enrolled before September 2024 – why is this?
This is the new course which has replaced the previous course- Diploma in Education and Training. This course is designed in line with the updated standards. The requirements of the course are different to the previous qualification, but these are set by Ofqual, not the providers
Subjects
During the course, you have access to our learning site to complete the course and be allocated a tutor to guide and support you. For each unit, there will be lessons that you can complete at your own pace, and there will also be an optional webinar lesson each month per unit (recordings are available for those unable to attend in person).
After the lessons, you will need to complete the online assignments. Being a Level 5 qualification, you will be expected to carry out some further research (some initial reference points will be provided), and you will also need to apply to your own teaching practice.
