About Health
Healthcare is an extremely large career field, with individuals being specialised in fields of medicine, physical and mental health, or being an assistant to professionals with more of a focus on the care for those who are sick, injured, disabled and old. The health industry is constantly growing and in large demand as our worldly population continues to grow and age.
Careers in Healthcare
There are a large number of careers in healthcare, all with varying degrees of qualifications required (however many begin with a Bachelor of Science); your future in health could be in the fields of:
Medicine
- Medicine is the science and practice of the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a large range of diseases and psychical health issues. A career in medicine can include being a general practitioner and assisting with the health issues of a range of individuals or in researching new and existing medicines to tackle technical problems of the 21st century.
- A career in medicine includes branches such as paediatrics (the physical health of children and their particular diseases), pathology (the science of the causes and effects of diseases in all ages) and orthopaedics (the correction of deformities, injuries or disorders of bones in the skeletal system)
Nursing
- Nursing is the profession or practice of providing care for the sick; encompassing autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, and communities in any state of health. While it focuses on the care of the ill, disabled and people who are close to death, a career in nursing also looks at the promotion of health and prevention of illness.
Optometry
- As a common health practitioner, an optometrist looks at measuring eyesight and detecting eye diseases, as well as prescribing corrective lenses or appropriate treatment to individuals with particular needs.
Dentistry
- A dentist is an individual who commonly examines and checks the health of teeth and gums, focusing on the treatment of diseases and other conditions including the repair and extraction of teeth and insertion of artificial ones.

Physiotherapy
- Rather than through drugs and surgery, a physiotherapist deals with the treatment of an individual’s physical health including disease, injury, and deformity through physical methods such as massage, exercise, and heat treatment.

Psychology
- As the scientific study of the human mind and functions, a psychologist looks at the mental characteristics of an individual or group and studies their behaviour, determining ways to improve mental health.

Aged Care
- Aged care is typically a special-purpose facility, which provides accommodation and other types of support including physical assistance or intense care towards frail or aged residents who independently live in a facility.
Healthcare Assistants
Healthcare assistants work as part of a team to deliver a range of care for patients in a wide variety of settings, including hospitals, communities, and practices. Working closely with nurses and other healthcare professionals, an assistant looks at the physical and mental care for patients when a specialised person is unable to be there.
Healthcare Qualifications
If you intend to become a doctor in your field and specialise in a specific area, a degree that includes a bachelor, masters and training such as an internship is always required.
If you intend to become a healthcare assistant, there are no set entry requirements to doing so. Depending on the responsibilities of an assistant and the field you choose, some employers may prefer healthcare training in the specialised field, however, a good standard of literacy and numeracy skills will always be required. Qualifications can be completed online and generally come in bundles with a range of quick educational modules that range from physical to mental knowledge, to help in assistance. Some may ask for a healthcare qualification such as a BTEC or NVQ.

Courses in healthcare can range in the qualifications and how the training can be completed; some examples include:
