How to Become an Eyebrow Technician

Are you ahead of the game when it comes to beauty? If you follow the latest trends and have an eye for detail, why not become an eyebrow technician?

As an eyebrow technician, you will work with a wide range of clients, making sure that their brows are picture-perfect. Whether you find yourself working in a busy salon or heading from home to home, you will need to have a solid skillset. Within this guide, we will take a look at how to become an eyebrow technician and how much you can expect to earn.

What Does an Eyebrow Technician do?

Before you get started as an eyebrow technician, you’re going to want to know what to expect. The services you offer will depend on your individual training. Here are some that you may consider:

  • Eyebrow Threading

Eyebrow threading is an eyebrow shaping technique that originated in Asia and is now popular here in the East. As the name suggests, the process involves using a piece of thread to remove the eyebrow hairs. You do this by pulling the thread tightly between your fingers and running it along the skin. Needless to say, it is a highly technical process, and you need to be trained.

  • Eyebrow Plucking

Perhaps the most common type of treatment, eyebrow plucking, is exactly what it says on the tin. Eyebrow technicians use tweezers to pluck out hairs. However, there’s a whole load more to it than that. As a beautician, you will need to be precise in this method and shape the eyebrows as you work. You will learn about a whole range of different styles.

  • Waxing

Next up, eyebrow technicians often use waxing to shape people’s brows. This process involves using hot wax and strips to remove the eyebrow hair. You will also have to prime the skin and give aftercare instructions. Ensuring that the person treats their skin well — with a cooling gel treatment — may be essential. As always, expert training is needed.

  • Eyebrow Tinting

Eyebrow tinting is a relatively new technique. To change the colour of someone’s eyebrows, you use a light dye (oftentimes henna). You need to be fully trained in this process. You will need to prepare the dye, prime the area of the skin, and then coat the eyebrows with it. There are many different brands of dye, tones, and styles too.

  • Microblading

Microblading is a process that puts pigment under the skin to look like extra hairs. It is semi-permanent. This process is used to make people’s eyebrows look fuller than they are. Over the last decade, there’s been a real shift towards thicker brows. For that reason, microblading has become a highly popular technique, with many salons now offering it as a standard treatment.

How Much Does an Eyebrow Technician Earn?

Before you start training as an eyebrow technician, it’s important to understand your salary expectations. According to the National Careers Service, eyebrow technicians make between £16,000 and £25,000. That is based on full-time hours of between 37 and 40 hours each week. However, you should keep in mind that many of these hours will be weekend and evening shifts. That may play into whether you decide to pursue the career.

What Qualifications Are Needed to Become an Eyebrow Technician?

Do you want to become a brow technician? If this job is calling your name, you may be wondering what qualifications you need. Most of the time, the way to get into this job is to go to a beauty school or college. You can undertake a vocational qualification that will allow you to offer threading, waxing, plucking, brow tinting, and shaping services to clients.

You may also want to look into apprenticeship opportunities in salons, beauticians, and hairdressers. To get started in the beauty industry, you will need to complete a training course in beauty therapy. During that time, you will learn the basics of cosmetology, brow shaping, eyelash tinting, health and safety, and more.

Of course, if you want specific brows training, you can undertake a specific brows course. You may learn the techniques of tweezing, brow lamination, and how to work with different face shapes. When you are well-versed on each eyebrow treatment, you can start offering them to your client base.

Remember that if you want to offer microblading, you will need microblading training and a licence to do so. Meanwhile, taking threading courses and brow lamination courses will give you the skills and confidence to offer high-quality services to your customers.

What Skills Are Needed to Become an Eyebrow Technician?

Of course, it takes a particular skill set to become a successful eyebrow technician. Before you start looking into ways to enter this field, you need to make sure you have what it takes. With that in mind, here are some of the skills you will need:

  • Eye for detail
  • Steady hands
  • Knowledge of skincare
  • Excellent communication
  • Intrapersonal skills
  • Knowledge of trends
  • Willingness to learn

The world of fashion, and even brow styles, is ever-changing. For that reason, you need to be prepared to continue your training on the job. As new techniques come into the sector, you will be expected to pick them up quickly and start offering them to your clients. Since you are working with cosmetics, you will also need to learn about the contraindications here.

Does Becoming an Eyebrow Technician Need Any Work Experience?

The short answer is no. Completing the right training for this job is the most important thing. When you are qualified, you may find that your first role is as an apprentice or junior beautician. In that case, clients may pay less than the standard rate. However, as you gain experience and start to become well-versed in eyebrow services, you will get new titles. You may become a senior or even an expert eyebrow technician, for example.

Career Prospects For an Eyebrow Technician

While the salary for an eyebrow technician is relatively low, you should know that there is room for progression here. When you have been working in this position for a matter of years, there will be chances to work your way up the career ladder. For example, should you work in a busy salon environment, you may be able to take on a managerial role. Overseeing a group of beauticians is a difficult job, and the pay scale reflects that.

Additionally, if you are looking for ways to increase your salary, you may consider going self-employed. While this means that you will have to pay your own taxes, you can dictate how much you get paid. By setting your own rates, you may be able to earn more.
