5 Ideal Jobs For People Who Are Passionate About Makeup

by CoursesOnline Contributors

One of the best creative jobs right now is makeup artistry. Thanks to platforms such as YouTube and TikTok giving professional makeup artists a way to share their techniques, makeup has evolved into a diverse career choice with the ability to let your creativity run wild, from fashion makeup to special effects.

Suppose you love watching beauty tutorials, creating your own makeup looks, and experimenting with different techniques, and want to find out how to become a makeup artist. In that case, one of these creative cosmetics careers could be for you.

Makeup artist in fashion

The fashion industry works closely with makeup artists to create the look they want, both in photo shoots and on the catwalk shows. As a fashion makeup artist, you will be working on models and applying their makeup to fit the designer’s brief.

To work in this industry, you will need to be able to work to a brief, be familiar with different makeup techniques and be able to interpret the overall look that is required. This can be rewarding but hard work, and you will need to work quickly as often there are several models who will need to be working at a certain time in quick succession.

If you love fashion and are able to complement clothing designs with makeup that suits the style, then this could be the career for you. To get started in this career, having a portfolio of makeup looks is a great place to start.

Studying fashion and beauty courses will also teach you the basics of how to create makeup looks that complement different fashions and the ins and outs of working in the fashion industry. You can also get into this career by attending beauty school or achieving a Bachelor’s degree in an art or fashion-related subject.

Makeup artist in film and TV

Working in film and television is a popular career path for makeup artists and can be an exciting route to go down. In film and TV makeup artistry, you will be working on film and television sets, applying makeup to actors and TV personalities before they go on set.

What kind of makeup you do can vary widely depending on the type of production, whether it is natural-looking makeup to enhance the features of a TV personality or special effects makeup to create realistic wounds, horns, and scars on the set of a fantasy film.

As a makeup artist in this industry, you will often have character designs or close briefs to work to ensure that the effects coincide with the story and ensure you create your looks in time for shooting. This can be an exciting career with a lot of creativity involved, perfect for those who love to explore more out-of-this-world looks.

Specialist makeup artist

Specialist makeup artists work with celebrities and individuals to create makeup looks specifically for them. This can be a very lucrative career, and you could end up working with some high-profile individuals.

The key here is to create makeup looks that suit an individual for all occasions, whether they are about to perform in a huge theatre or talking to a chat show host on the small screen. Being up to date with all the latest makeup trends is essential, so that your clients can remain on the cutting edge of what looks good.

However, specialist makeup artists will often specialise in one area, creating iconic makeup looks that one celebrity, in particular, is known for. They will also often develop close relationships with this celebrity and accompany them on the road and to shows around the world.

Retail beauty specialist

If you love working with the public and helping everyday men, women, and young people to find the right beauty products for them, this could be your dream job.

As a retail beauty specialist, you will be working in a high street store such as MAC, and customers will come to you for advice about beauty brands, as well as for in-store makeovers. You will be meeting people from all walks of life and offering cosmetic products and advice to people looking to explore new beauty looks.

Hair and beauty courses are a great way to get started as a beauty specialist and will give you the basic knowledge to kick-start your new career. These courses are also a great way to get into other beauty careers such as hairdressing, becoming a massage therapist, hairstylist, or beautician.

If you want to explore more hair and beauty careers where you get to work with the public, becoming a beauty therapist is another great option. You’ll offer makeovers, skincare advice, waxing, and other beauty therapy services in beauty salons to help people look and feel amazing. You can also become self-employed and be your own boss or own your own business once you have enough experience under your belt.

Makeup influencer

Being a beauty influencer is a fantastic career option for anyone to get into the beauty industry. As a beauty influencer, you will be working remotely on social media platforms, filming yourself and doing makeup looks on yourself and others. This career is very popular as it is more flexible than full-time positions, and you are able to create the content you want.

Beauty influencers rely on their videos being seen on video-sharing platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok. Therefore, to become a successful makeup influencer, knowledge of social media marketing is essential. However, knowing how to create videos and make your beauty tutorials look good is essential for your audience to stay engaged and be able to follow your looks.

Online social media marketing courses can teach you how to market yourself online, from tapping into new trends to creating user-friendly content.

SEO courses are a great way to find more specific tools to increase your videos reach, work out which keywords to use, how to create videos for the algorithm, and how to create titles that will be shared with more people.
