Course overview

GCSE Mathematics is an RQF Level 2 qualification awarded by AQA under specification 8300 (Ofqual QAN 601/4608/4). It is graded 1 to 9, with grade 4 the recognised standard pass — the same qualification sat in UK schools. The course is studied 100% online with specialist UK tutor support; exams are sat at an approved centre.

GCSE Mathematics grade 4 or above is the single most demanded qualification in UK education and employment. It is required for nursing, teacher training, police officer entry, civil service graduate schemes, and almost every professional apprenticeship. For adults who left school with a grade below 4, or without a maths GCSE at all, this is the qualification that restores access to all of those routes, on the same terms as someone who achieved it at school.

Who's It For?

  • Those who need GCSE Maths at grade 4 or above for nursing, teacher training, an apprenticeship or a Civil Service application.
  • Those who want the Higher tier route to grades 4–9.
  • Adults who left school with a grade below 4, or without a maths GCSE at all.
  • Those resitting after a grade 3 and wanting a specification where the total subject mark across three papers determines the grade.
  • Those who want a qualification where grade 4 is comparable to the old grade C.

Job outcomes

  • NHS Healthcare Assistant / Clinical Support Worker (Bands 2–4)
  • Civil Service Administrative Officer
  • Accounts Assistant / AAT Apprentice
  • Teacher Training Entry (Secondary Teacher)

  • Algebra (equations, functions, and graphs)

  • Geometry and measures (properties of shapes, mensuration, and trigonometry)
  • Probability
  • Statistics

Both Foundation tier (grades 1 to 5) and Higher tier (grades 4 to 9) are available; your tutor helps you decide which tier is right for your target grade.

Assessment

GCSE Mathematics (AQA 8300) is assessed by three written papers taken in May or June. All three papers are sat at the same tier (Foundation or Higher) in the same series, and content from any part of the specification may be assessed on any paper.

  • Paper 1 (8300/1F or 8300/1H): 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, 33⅓%. Non-calculator.
  • Paper 2 (8300/2F or 8300/2H): 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, 33⅓%. Calculator allowed.
  • Paper 3 (8300/3F or 8300/3H): 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, 33⅓%. Calculator allowed.

The three papers total 240 marks. Grades are awarded 9 to 1 on the combined total across all three papers; individual papers are not graded. Foundation tier awards grades 1 to 5; Higher tier awards grades 4 to 9 with an allowed grade 3.
