Learners analyse Hollywood, British, global, documentary, silent and experimental film across two written exams, and create a filmed or written production as a non-exam assessment.

The qualification has been taught since 2017 and was first awarded in 2019. WJEC Eduqas notes that this Ofqual-regulated qualification is not available to candidates in maintained schools and colleges in Wales.

What you'll learn

A Level Film Studies treats film as both a subject to analyse and a craft to practise.

  • Two written components ask you to write in depth about set films across Hollywood, contemporary American and British cinema, global film, documentary, silent cinema and experimental film.
  • A third component asks you to make your own work and account for it through a short film or screenplay with evaluative analysis.
