Duration study load

Typical study time is 12 to 18 months. You can start any time — there are no fixed term dates or cohorts. Study at your own pace around work and family commitments.

Delivery

100% online study with UK tutor support. Written exams are sat at approved exam centres across England.

The CPAC practical endorsement is delivered at laboratory centres in Bolton, Coventry, Mitcham, Newcastle and Taunton.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. However, the following are strongly recommended given the mathematical demands of the course:

  • Grade 6 or above in GCSE Physics (or the higher tier of GCSE Combined Science)
  • Grade 6 or above in GCSE Maths
  • Confidence with algebra, trigonometry, and calculus fundamentals

You will need to register separately as a private candidate with a JCQ-approved UK exam centre that offers both the written papers and the AQA practical endorsement. Confirming a suitable centre early in your studies is important, as fewer centres offer the endorsement than exam-only qualifications.

Professional Recognition

Awarded by AQA, an Ofqual-regulated UK awarding body. Regulated under the UK Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) at Level 3. Listed on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications. Independently quality-checked through IQA and EQA. Accepted by UK universities, employers, and professional bodies. Earns up to 56 UCAS points.

Assessment

A Level Physics (AQA 7408) is assessed by three written papers taken in May or June, plus a separate practical endorsement:

  • Paper 1: 2 hours, 85 marks, 34%. Covers Sections 1 to 5 and 6.1 Periodic Motion. 60 marks of short and long answer plus 25 marks of multiple choice.
  • Paper 2: 2 hours, 85 marks, 34%. Covers Sections 6.2 Thermal Physics, 7 and 8, drawing on assumed knowledge from Sections 1 to 6.1. 60 marks of short and long answer plus 25 marks of multiple choice.
  • Paper 3: 2 hours, 80 marks, 32%. Section A: compulsory practical skills and data analysis (45 marks). Section B: one option from Astrophysics, Medical Physics, Engineering Physics, Turning Points in Physics, or Electronics (35 marks).

Practical endorsement (CPAC): 12 required practical activities are completed alongside the written A Level, assessed against the Common Practical Assessment Criteria and reported separately as a Pass on the certificate. At least 15% of written marks assess practical skills.

Grading: A* to E, with U below E. The practical endorsement is reported separately.

Written papers are sat at 10 approved exam centres: Birmingham, Bolton, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, Mitcham, Newcastle, Romford, St Neots, and Taunton. The CPAC practical endorsement is delivered at 5 laboratory centres: Bolton, Coventry, Mitcham, Newcastle, and Taunton.
