Duration study load

Typical study time is 12 to 18 months. The course is self-paced — you can start any time with no fixed term dates. Most learners spend a few hours each week, but you can do more or less based on your own pace.

Delivery

Assessment

GCSE Chemistry (AQA 8462) is a tiered qualification with Foundation and Higher tier entries. It is assessed by two written papers taken in May or June.

  • Paper 1: 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks, 50%. Topics 1 to 5: Atomic structure and the periodic table; Bonding, structure and properties of matter; Quantitative chemistry; Chemical changes; Energy changes.
  • Paper 2: 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks, 50%. Topics 6 to 10: Rate and extent of chemical change; Organic chemistry; Chemical analysis; Chemistry of the atmosphere; Using resources.
  • Required practicals: 8 required practical activities are built into the specification. Questions on them account for at least 15% of your written marks.

Grading: 9 to 1. Foundation tier awards grades 1 to 5; Higher tier awards grades 4 to 9 with an allowed grade 3.

The course follows the AQA GCSE Chemistry specification 8462, divided into ten topics assessed across two written papers. Eight required practical activities are embedded throughout the specification.
