Duration study load

Typical study time is 12 to 18 months. Study is self-paced — most learners spend a few hours each week, but you can do more or less based on your own pace. There are no set term dates or cohorts; you can start any time.

Delivery

Study is 100% online and self-paced. Written exams are sat at an approved centre in the May or June series. Learners can log in any time from a phone, tablet or laptop.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. AQA specification 8192 has no previous learning requirements, and you do not need existing GCSEs to enrol — including GCSE English or Maths.

You should be comfortable reading and writing at length in English, as both papers require extended responses that construct an argument and reach a conclusion. You should be 18 or over, able to study independently online, and able to travel to an approved exam centre for the written papers.

  • Paper 1: The sociology of families and education. 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks, 50%. Covers the sociology of families, the sociology of education, and relevant social theory and methodology. Each section opens with two multiple choice questions followed by short and extended responses.
  • Paper 2: The sociology of crime and deviance and social stratification. 1 hour 45 minutes, 100 marks, 50%. Covers the sociology of crime and deviance, the sociology of social stratification, and relevant social theory and methodology. Same structure as Paper 1.

Grading: 9 to 1 (9 being the highest).

Exams are sat at approved centres: Birmingham, Bolton, Coventry, Doncaster, High Wycombe, Mitcham, Newcastle, Romford, St Neots and Taunton.

Exams are sat at centres run by Tutors and Exams, a specialist private candidate exam provider, at 10 locations across England.
