This Combined Arts online degree gives you the opportunity to explore a wide range of creative disciplines, following your ambition and passion while developing your own creative voice and growing a wide range of transferrable skills.

This Integrated Master’s model combines undergraduate and postgraduate study in one efficient, effective degree which will give you a strong creative theoretical background, as well as creative space to explore your own independent research and projects.   

Studied 100% online and in a way that works for you, the Combined Arts courses bring expertise from across the creative disciplines; design, writing, illustration, visual communication, and fine art. You will choose one of two courses – Combined Arts: Creativity, or Combined Arts: Design Fundamentals – and through these courses, you will focus on in-demand skills aligned with future careers. With a focus on problem-based learning, you’ll grow as an engaged and innovative creative who can apply your knowledge to real-world problems.

Integrated Master's Combined Arts: Creativity

The Combined Arts: Creativity course focuses on the ability to generate new ideas, solutions, or approaches by using imagination, critical thinking and other essential creative skills. 

On this course, your practice could involve various skills, including visual communication, content creation, storyboarding, copywriting, prototyping, art direction, and creative writing. It can also include technical skills linked with a chosen medium, such as understanding photography or video techniques.

While the definition of creativity has evolved and, in some cases, may be industry specific, there are conserved core components of creativity that this course will explore. Through your approach to your PBL cases, your artistic, interdisciplinary skills will intertwine and build on one another, creating a robust foundation for creativity in various personal and professional contexts.  Empathy - particularly cognitive empathy - has been linked to increased creative activity, and some PBL cases will explore those aspects that link creativity to wellbeing.

Integrated Master's Combined Arts: Design Fundamentals

The Combined Arts: Design Fundamentals course allows you to better understand the core theory of several key design principles, explored through your own research and your response to problem-based learning (PBL).  This may include concepts such as balance (symmetrical and asymmetrical), contrast, emphasis, hierarchy, repetition, pattern, white space, movement, variety, unity and proportion.

Your PBL cases will explore designing for specific mediums, to understand the nuances of print design (paper types, colour profiles, printing processes), web design (responsive design, accessibility), and other mediums like animation or motion graphics.

A key aspect of your PBL cases will involve various modes of visual communication and your investigations like to the cases will explore areas such as branding and identity, idea generation and user research etc. On this course, you will delve into a range of theories underpinning core design concepts encompassing a blend of technical, creative problem-solving, communication, and understanding of user-centric needs to produce impactful and effective designs which will include aspects of quality evaluation.

This an intensive learning model, focusing on the development of in-demand skills more quickly than a traditional full-time equivalent course. 100% of your assessment will be coursework. There are no exams on this course.

Assessment methods may include:

Videos, presentations, visual work and written assignments

In the final year of your undergraduate studies, you’ll complete a supervised Final Major Project as a reflection of your first two years of learning

In the final year of your postgraduate studies, you’ll complete a Final Major Project at master’s level, drawing on your combined specialisms
