Duration study load

Learners can choose to complete in 6, 9 or 12 months:

  • 6-month route (intensive): approximately 138 hours of study per month — for learners with strong workplace evidence opportunities.
  • 9-month route (balanced pace): approximately 92 hours of study per month.
  • 12-month route (steady pace): approximately 69 hours of study per month — suited to those working full-time shifts.

Total qualification time is 830 hours, with 491 guided learning hours.

Delivery

Theory is delivered remotely and studied around your shifts. Assessment is occupational: competence is evidenced in your own workplace, so access to an appropriate healthcare or adult-care setting is required throughout. The course uses a blended learning approach combining remote theory delivery with workplace-based evidence and assessment.

  • Dedicated tutor and assessor: One named tutor and assessor from enrolment to certification who plans your assessment schedule, reviews evidence and provides individual feedback.
  • Workplace observation: Direct observation of real practice is the primary evidence for competence units, supported by professional discussion, reflective accounts, witness testimony and work products.
  • Consistent support: Scheduled reviews, live group sessions, written learning materials and responsive contact between sessions.

Entry requirements

You must be working or on placement in a healthcare-support setting. City & Guilds sets no formal entry qualifications and there is no minimum age above 16, but competence units are assessed by direct observation of real practice, so workplace access is essential throughout.

Pathways

The Level 3 Diploma builds senior frontline competence. The Level 4 develops lead-practitioner and supervisory capability. Progression to a management role normally requires the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care.

Progression, employment, promotion, CQC registration and service ownership are not guaranteed.

Course features

  • Flexible completion routes: 6, 9 or 12 months
  • One dedicated named tutor and assessor throughout
  • Workplace-based competence assessment — no written exam
  • Approximately 150 optional units available across adult nursing, mental health, maternity, theatre support and therapy-support specialisms
  • Employment support (CV, applications, interview preparation) during and after completion
  • City & Guilds registration and certification included in the fee
  • All learning materials included
  • Remote theory delivery — study around your shifts
