How to Become a Global Marketing Manager

Marketing is a huge industry which makes up to $17 trillion (£14 trillion) worldwide. The role of a global marketing manager is essential to all industries, as it allows the promotion of a business, its products and services worldwide, like international networking and the ability to expand the company globally.

If you have excellent communication skills and want a high-profile and highly-paid career, then find out below how you can become a global marketing manager.

What Does a Global Marketing Manager do?

Global marketing managers work on marketing strategies and campaigns on a global level, taking a company’s products or services and finding the best way to market them in different countries.

This is far from simply translating an advertising campaign into another language. Instead, it involves using one’s own expertise in other cultures and international marketing practices to ensure the success of a business worldwide and the development of a global brand.

The day-to-day duties of an international marketing manager, therefore, will vary depending on the industry you work in, the size of the company and the specific job description. However, some of the daily tasks you might do include:

  • Managing and leading a team of marketing executives
  • Create marketing strategies and international marketing plans
  • Plan and launch new products in international markets
  • Liaise with other departments, e.g. management and regional marketing teams
  • Conduct market research and statistical research
  • Meet and discuss marketing campaigns and product launches with clients, contractors and marketing professionals around the world
  • Ensure you create thorough marketing plans with realistic timelines and marketing budgets
  • Organise and attend events and marketing activities to increase brand awareness
  • Report on the effectiveness of marketing efforts in new markets, solve problems head on and adapt to challenges

How Much Does a Global Marketing Manager Earn?

According to the National Careers Service, senior or global marketing managers can earn up to £65,000 a year or higher. The starting salary for a marketing manager is around £27,000.

What Qualifications Are Needed to Become a Global Marketing Manager?

In order to become a global marketing manager, you are likely to need a bachelor’s degree. Often, marketing roles are open to all graduates. However, having a relevant degree can help you gain an advantage over other candidates. Before becoming a global marketing manager, you might want to explore how to become a marketing manager, and from there, you can expand your skills in global marketing.

Relevant degree subjects for a career in global marketing management include marketing, business management, business administration, digital marketing and public relations. If you have a degree in another subject, then you can increase your chances of securing a graduate marketing role by studying online courses in relevant areas and upskilling your C.V. There are a range of Marketing, Management and Digital Marketing courses online which can teach you the valuable skills employers are looking for in marketing and marketing management roles.

Following your degree, you might want to look into a master’s degree in areas such as languages, global marketing or international business to help you progress into the global marketing area. Global marketing is a specialism of marketing, and if you know that this marketing specialism is right for you, it is good to always bear in mind where you want to be ultimately, even when applying for more entry-level positions in marketing.

If you do not have a degree, then you might be able to progress into global marketing management through an apprenticeship or by working your way up through a marketing assistant role. If you want to explore global digital marketing, then explore how to become a digital marketing manager to further your opportunities in this area.

What Skills Are Needed to Become a Global Marketing Manager?

Global marketing managers need a variety of skills, in particular those which cover the areas of marketing, communication and leadership. If you have experience in a marketing or leadership role, then you are already in a good position to develop the key skills needed for this role.

If you do not have relevant experience or qualifications and need to develop these skills, then taking an online Marketing course or a distance-learning Leadership course can help you hone in these vital skills needed for the role.

Some of the key skills that a global marketing manager needs include:

  • Communication skills
  • Analytical skills
  • Digital skills and business marketing skills
  • Social media expertise
  • Organisational and time management skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Project management skills
  • Ability to interpret data and conduct market research
  • Knowledge of marketing and advertising
  • Knowledge of global market trends and global business
  • Team working skills

Does Becoming a Global Marketing Manager Need Any Work Experience?

If you have a degree relevant to marketing or have studied an online course, then work experience is not usually essential to a marketing role such as a marketing assistant or marketing executive role. However, having experience working as part of a team or in a customer-facing role, for example, can be advantageous.

In order to succeed in securing marketing manager jobs, you will often need some years of experience in a marketing role, such as working as a digital marketing assistant, marketing executive or another role within the industry. You can also explore marketing management roles if you have experience in a similar role, such as in business, advertising or sales management. From a marketing management role, you can then develop into a global marketing manager through further professional development courses.

If you do not have a relevant degree or managerial experience, then examine the skills you have built up through your work and identify any transferable skills, such as communication skills. You can then take an online course in marketing or management and apply for marketing roles from there.

Career Prospects for a Global Marketing Manager

The career prospects for a global marketing manager are broad, as you will have developed several transferable skills and have already progressed quite a lot in your career development and work experience. You could go on to become a full-time regional manager or marketing director, work as a freelance marketing consultant, or explore related fields such as brand management.

If you enjoy interacting with a variety of people daily and planning marketing strategies to help businesses to succeed and expand on a global scale, then this career path could be for you.

Develop your skills through online courses, explore work opportunities in marketing and take the first step today into your dream job as a global marketing manager.
