Top Jobs to Look Out for in 2021: Everything You Need to Know

by CoursesOnline Contributors

Browse courses

It’s been a roller-coaster ride of a year. Between August and October 2020, the number of Brits in work fell by a massive 144,000. While that is a huge amount, it is less than the original forecasts. Toward the start of the pandemic, experts had predicted a 250,000 fall in jobs across the country. Now that we are nearing the new year, what can we expect?

Within this guide, we will take a look at the sectors that are expected to grow when 2021 rears its head as well as the companies hiring. Here’s what you need to know.

Top Job Sectors for the New Year

Wondering what sectors are likely to be hiring when the new year comes around? Understanding where there’s a demand for work could help you when it comes to finding the ideal role for you. Let’s take a look at a few of the fastest-growing UK industries:

1. Digital advertising

Over the last ten years, the realms of digital marketing and advertising have been surging. Between 2015 and 2019, the sector saw quarter-on-quarter growth. More recently, this is one of the areas that has been resistant to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. With that in mind, taking the leap and opting for a role in this sector is a good idea.

2. Transport and logistics

Transport and logistics is a fast-growing industry in the UK. Between 2012 and 2016, the number of freight logistics businesses established surged by 229%. Plus, a recent study stated that this sector was struggling in London but thriving in the North East.

3. Construction

Between 2016 and 2018, there was a massive 10% growth in the construction industries in the UK. Over the last few years, this sector has only gained in strength. Now that we are moving into 2021, it will be interesting to see whether this momentum continues.

Which Companies are Hiring in the UK?

Despite the downturn in job vacancies as a whole, there are plenty of companies hiring in the coming months. Some of the world’s best-known brands have positions available here in the United Kingdom. If you’re looking for a place to kickstart your job search, it’s worth taking a peek at some of the following companies and their careers pages.

Apple

If you’re tech-savvy and looking for a new challenge, Apple currently has more than 100 UK vacancies listed on their main website. The job roles range from creatives to business experts and store managers and are located at various places across the country.

Barclays

Next up, Barclays also has more than 100 roles available in the United Kingdom right now. Many of these positions fall into the realms of app development and software engineering. However, there are also more traditional positions available, such as a business analyst.

Bet 365

Feeling lucky? There’s a whole variety of jobs available for bet365. Again, many of these are based around tech, with the company looking for software developers and network engineers. However, there are also service desk manager and vendor manager roles.

Boots

With just under a thousand jobs available, there are plenty of opportunities at Boots right now. While many of these positions call for specialists (such as pharmacists and optometrists), there are also store manager and advisor roles too.

Bupa

Bupa now has almost 300 vacancies listed on their main website. Since this is a huge business, the roles range dramatically from bank health advisor to cleaning assistant.

Costa Coffee

On the hunt for a part-time or flexible job? Working at Costa Coffee could be the answer. The well-loved cafe chain has over 60 positions available on their website. These roles range from barista to manager and could be the ideal way to ‘perk’ up your new year.

Facebook

Think working at Facebook would be a dream come true? If you’re already screaming ‘yes’ at your screen, you should know that the company currently has around 170 jobs available in the UK. The roles are tech-focussed, such as software engineer and research scientist.

NHS

If you want to step into the healthcare field, look no further. The NHS now has more than 18,000 roles available. Of course, these roles are spread across the country. You can use the handy search tool on the main website to find vacancies in your area.

Sky

With more than 300 vacancies that need filling, it’s worth taking a look at Sky’s career page. There’s a wide variety of positions available right now including resource manager, contact centre advisors, recruitment specialist, and business performance manager.

How to Boost Your Chances of Landing a Job

Now that you know all about some of the top jobs to look out for in 2021, let’s talk about how you can land one of them. One thing’s for sure, the job market is going to be a tough place. For that reason, you need to sharpen up if you want to get a new role. Here are three of the ways you can boost your chances of career success in the new year.

Reskill and upskill

When was the last time that you learnt something new? If it’s been years since you invested in yourself, the new year is the ideal opportunity to do just that. Signing up to a course on Courses Online is the first step towards gaining more skills. When a recruiter looks at your CV, they will be impressed to see that you’re always training (and retraining).

Bolster your CV

While we’re on the topic of your CV, it might be time for an update. Before you start applying for new roles come the new year, take some time to go over this document and edit it. You can add new skills, new work experience, and simply make sure it’s in shape.

Reach out to contacts

Don’t be afraid to reach out to your contacts! When you’re looking for a new role, speak to as many people as possible about your plans. You may want to connect with previous work contacts on LinkedIn, drop them a quick ‘hello’ email, or pick up the phone.

The Takeaway!

With the new year just around the corner, it’s the ideal time to start thinking about a new career or a career change. Taking the time to look at the top jobs to look out for in 2021 and sprucing up your CV with new skills is a solid plan of action. Get on it now!
