Course overview

Do you carry out assessments in the workplace, including observations or work appraisals as well as assessments in a classroom, training, or simulated environment? Are you working as a trainee assessor looking to achieve an official qualification?

Yes? Then the Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement course would be the Assessor Award course suitable for you.

At MKLC, we have designed the Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement content to be accessible for all. The course lessons are self-paced, so if you feel confident in certain areas, you progress quickly through these to the areas you wish to focus more on. You can also complete the assignments in the order you prefer. You will receive feedback from your tutor within 48 hours of submission, but each piece is independent so you can submit pieces whilst waiting on feedback from another.

You have contact with your tutor by e-mail, as well as the main office 9 am to 5 pm which is staffed only by employees who are qualified teachers and assessors and have experience with the courses, including the Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement, as well as the other options of the Assessor Award to be able to give you the most effective response to queries.

Who's It For?

This qualification is intended for those who assess both occupational competence in the work environment and vocational skills, knowledge, and understanding in a workshop, classroom, or other training environment, other than assessing competence in a work environment.

Assessment

Observation of practical assessments:

For units 2 and 3 you will need to have access to at least two candidates going through assessments and have these assessments observed. Observations can be carried out by qualified personnel at your workplace, they will need to have their Assessor Award and IQA qualifications, and you will need to submit evidence of their qualifications. Alternatively, MKLC can do the observations either by video link or live visit depending on location, there is an additional cost for this.

Subjects

Core Units
Unit 1Understanding the principles and practices of assessment

This is a knowledge unit and requires you to be able to understand the principles of assessment, the different methods, how to plan assessments, involve others, make decisions, understand quality assurance, legal and good practice requirements, and how to manage information.

The method of assessment of the unit is through written assignments; there are reasonable adjustments available for those who need them, for example, professional discussions.

Although it is mandatory, this unit alone does not qualify you to assess. Those who choose to complete this unit only will be those who need to know about assessment but who are not going to carry out any assessments.

Unit 2Assess occupational competence in the work environment

This unit of the Award in Assessing Occupational Competence in the work environment is ideal for assessors doing NVQ-type qualifications where assessments are carried out at work with candidates performing their everyday duties.

You have to demonstrate that you can plan an assessment of occupational competence, make decisions, provide records, and follow legal and good practice requirements.

The method of assessment is by observation of you carrying out an assessment in the workplace, questioning the learner, discussing with the learner, and examining their work products as well as their learner statements.

It includes the following assessment methods (although not all of these require performance evidence):

  • observation of performance in the work environment;
  • examining products of work;
  • questioning the learner;
  • discussing with the learner;
  • use of others (witness testimony);
  • looking at learner statements;
  • recognising prior learning
Unit 3Assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding

This unit of the Award in Assessing Vocational Achievement is aimed at those who carry out assessments in the classroom or other training environments.

You have to prepare assessments such as tests, assignments, questions, or projects, carry out these assessments, keep records, and follow legal and good practice requirements.

The method of assessment is by observation of you carrying out assessments of vocational skills outside the work environment.

It includes the following assessment methods (although not all of these require performance evidence):

  • assessments of the learner in simulated environments;
  • skills tests;
  • oral and written questions;
  • assignments;
  • projects;
  • case studies;
  • recognising prior learning.
