How to Become a Hotel Manager

Are you a people person? Do you love working in a fast-paced environment? Would you like to travel and live in various locations around the world? If you’re saying ‘yes yes yes’, becoming a hotel manager in small or large hotel chains may be the right step for you. Here’s a breakdown of everything that you need to know to get started.

What does a hotel manager do?

If you love travel and hospitality, a job as a hotel manager may be calling your name. As the name suggests, a hotel manager takes care of the daily running of a hotel chain. You’ll oversee everything from the staff to the budget and marketing activities. With that in mind, you will need to have a varied skillset and be highly organised. Some of the tasks the position includes:

  • Hiring and managing staff members
  • Creating shift and timesheets for the concierge and staff
  • Managing the front desk and being front-of-house
  • Overseeing the hotel general manager
  • Managing staff wages and budgeting
  • Taking care of the hotel financial planning
  • Dealing with any human resources tasks
  • Working in the front office
  • Setting targets for staff members
  • Liaising with third parties (such as food and beverage companies)
  • Overseeing the everyday cleaning and maintenance
  • Offering additional guest services when needed
  • Dealing with insurance and business admin
  • Taking customer feedback and customer complaints
  • Ensuring the best possible guest experience

Keep in mind that the above list is by no means comprehensive. Hotel managers have to wear many different hats to get the job done. For that reason, this type of role suits a professional who is willing to adapt and learn new things on the job.

What qualifications are needed to become a hotel manager?

Many hotel managers don’t hold any formal qualifications in the field. Instead, they work their way up through the ranks. For example, you might start by working as a receptionist and learn the ropes over a matter of years. You should keep in mind that industry experience is necessary for this type of role, whether you decide to get qualifications or not. You have to understand the ins and outs of the business to succeed in it.

Should you want to enhance your employability, it’s worth looking into qualifications in hotel management. The first step is to complete the relevant NQF/QCF/RQF Level 3 Award/Diploma.

When you have completed that, you can move forward and undertake the Level 4 Diploma in Hospitality and Hotel Management and then the Level 5 Diploma in Hospitality and Hotel Management. If you are already working full-time or part-time, you may be able to take these qualifications online at a time that suits you.

What skills do you need to be a hotel manager?

    • High level of communication skills

    • Leadership skills and management skills

    • Time management

    • Excellent communication

    • An understanding of hospitality management

    • Relevant work experience in hotel groups

    • Experience in the hospitality industry

    • Excellent customer service skills

How long does it take to qualify as a hotel manager?

Now that you understand the types of qualifications you could undertake, let’s talk about how long they will take. Getting a diploma in this area is a great way to start your career. When you have completed your NQF/QCF/RQF Level 3 Award/Diploma, both the Level 4 and Level 5 Diploma in Hospitality and Hotel Management take nine months each. Of course, you may want a break between doing these courses. You should allow roughly two years to complete these diplomas if you’re working.

How much does a hotel manager make?

If you think a career in hospitality is for you, you might be wondering how much a hotel manager makes. The truth of the matter is that your salary can differ greatly depending on your skill level, experience, and the size of the hotel that you are responsible for. Hotel managers can be paid between £20,000 and £60,000 per year. You may gradually see your wage rise as you gain more experience.
