About IT University Courses

As an IT undergraduate, you’ll focus on how computers and computer technology are used in a business context. So, as well as developing technical skills such as programming, you’ll learn how businesses function. You’ll also become a logical thinker, a creative problem solver and a clear communicator. Skills like these are incredibly transferable.

Because studying IT involves putting theory into practice, you’ll have access to an exciting selection of advanced software and new technologies. Core modules are likely to cover web development, IT infrastructure, programming languages, data management, project management and information security. You’ll also have the chance to specialise in areas like cyber security, business intelligence, UX design and artificial intelligence.

Entry Requirements

To gain a place on an IT degree course, you’ll usually need three A levels (or equivalent qualifications) including an A level in maths. You’ll also need GCSEs in English and maths. However, if you’re a mature candidate without formal qualifications, there are alternative routes you can take.

For example, many universities will welcome you if you’ve already gained some relevant experience. You could also explore the option of a one-year foundation course, designed to give you the skills you’ll need for degree-level study. And if you haven’t got the GCSEs you need, you should be able to sit university maths and English tests.

Funding

Studying a degree for the first time? Then you’ll be eligible for a full tuition fee loan and an income-based maintenance loan to cover living costs. If you’re a parent and you’re studying full time, you could also apply for an extra learning allowance, a childcare grant, or an additional loan.

Tuition fee loans and maintenance loans are available for part-time students too, but your maintenance loan will vary depending on where you live, your household income and your course intensity.

Workload & Difficulty

Because degrees in IT are fairly practical, they involve plenty of contact hours. As well as completing individual projects you’ll attend lab sessions, group workshops, lectures, seminars and tutorials. Some universities also offer a one year paid placement, which provides a great opportunity to build relationships with employers.

If you can’t commit to full-time study, you could opt for a six-year part-time programme or a blended degree. The latter generally involves fewer contact hours and you may have the option to attend evening and weekend lectures.

Career Prospects

There are plenty of roles available for graduates, as demand for IT professionals is growing. Technical jobs like programming, software development and web design are the most popular choices, although graduates also opt to work in retail management, finance, manufacturing and education.

Once you’ve completed your degree you’ll have access to a wide range of employers, including established companies like IBM and Apple, as well as small business and startups. There’s also the option of becoming self-employed.

Over 1 million people work in the UK’s IT industry. If you’re ready to join them, check out our IT degree courses today!
