About Marketing University Courses

Sign up for a marketing degree and you’ll study a wide range of fascinating topics. These are likely to include:

  • The fundamentals of marketing
  • Market research
  • Advertising
  • Consumer behaviour
  • Branding
  • PR
  • Digital marketing
  • Marketing campaigns
  • Analytics
  • Marketing strategies.

When you’re choosing between universities, we recommend looking at courses that are part of the Chartered Institute of Marketing’s Graduate Gateway programme, as these will give you a professional award as well as a degree. It’s also worth knowing that BA Marketing degrees tend to focus on marketing communications and creativity, while BSc Marketing degrees place more emphasis on the analytical aspects of marketing.

If you already have a 2:2 degree in marketing or any other subject, you could consider applying for an MA or an MSc in a specialist area of marketing such as branding, digital marketing or marketing management.

Entry Requirements

To apply for an undergraduate degree in marketing you’ll need three A levels or equivalent level 3 qualifications, plus GCSEs in English and maths at grade 4 or above. For a master’s degree, you’ll need at least a 2:2 degree in any subject, although a marketing degree will give you an advantage.

If you don’t have the required academic qualifications, don’t despair, as an increasing number of universities will still offer you a place if you have a substantial amount of work experience and/or professional marketing qualifications.

Funding

If you’re applying for your first full-time undergraduate degree, you’ll receive a tuition fee loan and an income-based maintenance loan to help with living costs. Part-time students can also apply for these, but the amount of the maintenance loan will vary according to each applicant’s household income and course intensity. If you’re a parent, you could be eligible for extra allowances on top.

Interested in taking a master’s degree? Thanks to the UK Government, you’re eligible to apply for an £11,000 Master’s Loan, designed to help with the cost of postgraduate study. The money will be paid directly into your bank account, so you can put it towards tuition fees or living costs.

Workload & Difficulty

A full-time marketing degree involves around 14 contact hours, plus 30 hours of independent study. However, there are plenty of part-time and online courses on offer for students who need to fit their studies around their other commitments. Online courses are particularly flexible, as they usually allow you to study at your own pace.

When it comes to course delivery, in-class marketing courses include an interesting mix of lectures, seminars, tutorials, group projects and workshops. If you opt for an online programme, you’ll access your course materials via a virtual learning environment, but you may still attend virtual webinars, and live lectures.

While exams often contribute towards your final grade, most university marketing courses are assessed via a combination of assignments, presentations, group work, portfolios and exams. And don’t worry if university level study is new to you, as you’ll have access to supportive student advisors and your own tutor. Some universities also provide confidence-building academic support sessions.

Career Prospects

Once you’ve graduated, a wide selection of exciting roles awaits you. You could become a content strategist, a social media marketer, a digital marketing executive, a marketing manager or a campaign manager. You could find employment with a company’s in-house marketing department, or with a marketing agency. You could even become a freelancer.

Of course, you’ll also have access to the annual graduate schemes that are run by established companies like BT, Virgin Media and L’Oreal. Gaining a place on one of these schemes is a great way to gain extra training and hands-on experience.

If you want a career that’s exciting, varied and accessible, why not boost your job prospects by signing up for a university marketing course? Check out our latest courses today!
