About Law University Courses

As well as being intellectually stimulating, studying law at degree level will give you an impressive mix of transferable skills. You’ll become an eagle-eyed researcher, an impressive communicator and an analytical thinker. You’ll also develop excellent problem-solving skills

If you’re keen to become a solicitor or barrister, an LLB (Hons) Law is the first step towards fulfilling your ambitions. Once you’ve gained a place on a Qualifying Law Degree course, you’ll study the legal system via seven core subjects:

  • Constitutional and administrative law
  • Criminal law
  • Law of tort
  • Contract law
  • Land law
  • Trusts
  • Equity law
  • European Union

Your legal studies will also include a range of optional subjects such as tax law, public law, intellectual property law, criminology and family law.

Entry Requirements

While grade requirements vary, you’ll generally need five GCSEs and three A levels to access a traditional LLB (Hons) degree course. However, some universities will waive their academic requirements if you have some relevant work experience. This is also the case if you take your law degree online.

If you’ve already got an unrelated degree and you want to join the legal profession,  you can take a one-year Graduate Diploma of Law, which is a law conversion course that covers the foundations of legal practice.

Funding

If this is your first undergraduate degree, you’ll be eligible for a student loan that will cover all of your tuition fees. You can also apply for a maintenance loan to cover your living costs, although this is based on household income. There’s extra help available for parents too, including an income-dependent childcare grant, a learning allowance and a loan for single parents. You’ll need to be a full-time law student to access these.

Keen to study law part-time? You’ll still be eligible for a tuition fee loan, but your maintenance loan will vary depending on your course intensity, your household income and where you’ll be living while you study.

Workload & Difficulty

Law is an academically rigorous subject, so you should expect to work hard throughout your LLB. However, you don’t have to study on a full-time basis, as there are plenty of flexible part-time and online law courses.

When it comes to course delivery, your law degree is likely to include a mix of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Preparation for your seminars and tutorials will involve research, background reading and assignments.

Career Prospects

Maybe you’ve already decided to undertake further study and become a solicitor or barrister? If this is the case, once you’ve qualified you’ll have the opportunity to specialise in a particular area like human rights law, commercial law, employment law or international law.

Graduating from law school also opens doors to alternative career options. As a law graduate, you could become a chartered legal executive, a paralegal, a probation officer or a police officer. The finance sector could also benefit from your legal knowledge and skills.
